The things almost every family wants to know before that first appointment.
As soon as that first tooth appears. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends children be seen by six months after the first tooth erupts, or by their first birthday — whichever comes first.
Every dental specialist finishes dental school and then adds several years of additional training. For Dr. James and Dr. Okerstrom, that training was entirely about infants, children and adolescents — including childhood development and behavior. Our staff, office design and activities are all built around young visitors.
It's usually short and simple. We focus on getting to know your child, check tooth placement and health, look for any gum or jaw concerns, and do a bit of cleaning if it's a good fit. We'll answer your at-home care questions and send you home with helpful tips.
Keep it positive. Kids pick up on adult apprehension, so skip the scary stories. Show them photos of the office and the themed rooms, and let them know the doctor is there to keep their smile healthy. Our team is specially trained to handle nerves.
Plan on 45 to 90 minutes. We'd rather move at your child's pace than rush them out the door.
