🚨 Emergencies

Don't panic. Do this.

For a broken jaw, uncontrolled bleeding or a head injury, go to the emergency room first.

First aid

Step-by-step by situation

Knocked-Out Permanent Tooth

  1. 1Pick the tooth up by the crown β€” never the root.
  2. 2Rinse gently with water. Don't scrub or remove attached tissue.
  3. 3If you can, slip it back into the socket and hold it there.
  4. 4If not, keep it in milk (or the child's saliva) and get to us immediately.
  5. 5Time matters most: call us right away at (503) 582-8200.

Knocked-Out Baby Tooth

  1. 1Do not try to reinsert it β€” that can damage the adult tooth underneath.
  2. 2Rinse the mouth with warm water and use gauze for bleeding.
  3. 3Call us so we can check the area and plan a space maintainer if needed.

Chipped or Broken Tooth

  1. 1Rinse the mouth with warm water and save any pieces you find.
  2. 2Use a cold compress on the outside of the cheek to reduce swelling.
  3. 3Call us the same day β€” even a small chip can expose the nerve.

Toothache

  1. 1Rinse with warm salt water and floss gently to remove trapped food.
  2. 2Use a cold compress for swelling. Never place aspirin against the gum.
  3. 3Call us to find out what's causing the pain.

Prevention

Most of these come from sports

A custom-fitted athletic mouthguard is the single most effective thing you can do to protect your child's teeth, lips and jaw. We make them here.

πŸ₯

Contact sports

Football, hockey, lacrosse, martial arts β€” a guard is non-negotiable.

πŸ›Ή

Wheels & ramps

Skateboarding, BMX and scooters send us plenty of chipped front teeth.

Even 'safe' sports

Basketball elbows are responsible for more dental injuries than you'd think.
